Autism, also called Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), is a chronic neurodevelopmental disorder
Autism has an early onset in childhood, marked by difficulties in social interaction, communication and restricted, repetitive behaviors. Its onset usually begins by age 2 or 3. Autism is susceptible to people of any race, ethnicity, or social background. Family income, lifestyle, or educational level doesn’t affect a child’s risk of autism. Global prevalence of ASD is constantly on rise (1:36 as of 2023).
In India, 1 in 100 children under age 10 are diagnosed as autistic (2018). While there isn’t a medication that can address the core symptoms of ASD, every autistic child presents itself with different set of symptoms and severity. Hence, need of the hour is a molecule/therapy that can modulate the underlying cause and bring about change in autistic child’s life.
